A quintet of Iola High School students know a thing or two about history.

Brad Bazo, Cody Cokely, Eli Grover, Tristan Sigfusson and Jason Tidd have proven as much by earning a shot at the National History Bowl in Washington, D.C.

Now, they’ve issued a challenge to the community, with a March 24 fundraiser in the IHS commons area.

The students will take on all comers in a 100-question quiz.

“That’s the great part about history — it’s so eclectic,” said Travis Hermstein, team coach. “It can cover anything from history of literature or world dictators to pop culture and current events.”

The students have raised about $1,200 of the $4,000 necessary to fund the trip, Hermstein said. They are seeking sponsors for the quiz, earning money for each correct answer they provide.

Donations also will be collected at the door.

The Allen County Historical Society is assisting the students at the conclusion of the quiz by hosting a pancake and sauge dinner at about 6 p.m. Again, donations will be taken.

The National History Bowl is Apirl 28 at a number of historic sites around Washington, including the Smithsonian Institute and U.S. embassies.

For more information, contact any of the students, Hermstein at 365-4715 or via email at travis.hermstein@usd257.org. Other questions may be sent to ACHS at
