Ringing in a new class

Iola Elementary School's incoming kindergarten class renewed a school tradition by ringing the IES bell. They'll get a chance to ring it again after they complete the fifth grade.

They can hardly reach now, but this year’s crop of kindergartners will have no problem ringing the bell when they leave Iola Elementary School as fifth grade graduates.

Per tradition, students gathered Friday morning to ring in their first school year in the building. 

You couldn’t tell, but Assistant Principal Tiffany Koehn wore earplugs as she helped some of the students ring the bell.

And with good reason.

Though the bell, which Iola Rotary Club restored as a gift for the school, was fabricated in 1868, it still packs a punch.
