While there is not an official Farm City Days “fun run” this year, the Allen County Relay for Life will host its own 5k run Saturday to raise awareness and support for the upcoming 2013 relay.
Chrissy Powell, event chair for Allen County Relay for Life, said she had been contacted by several people saying they were disappointed to see a 5K run had not been organized for the celebration. Powell said she realized she could organize the event to support the relay, set for April 2013, and began working on it two weeks ago.
She said due to the lack of notice for the run, she will be happy with any number of people who show up to support the cause.
“I would be happy if we had 10 people,” Powell said. But, “the more the merrier.”
The 5K route will trace that of the Charley Melvin Mad Bomber Run for your Life race that occurs here in July. There also will be a one-mile walk. People who register for the event, which is $20, will be able to select a specific Relay for Life team to support with their registration fee. All of the funds will go directly to support April’s relay.
Powell said her goal is not only to raise funds for the event, but to help people become more aware of the Relay for Life events in Allen County. She said the awareness will help “incorporate more teams and members.”
Powell said she hopes the event will catch on and numbers will increase for next year’s fun run. Overall, she knows the race will be a success.
“We just want to let people have fun, and let them run,” Powell said.
There will be prizes for the top three finishers in the race for ages 16 and older, as well as prizes for the top three finishers in the 15 and under category. Runners for the event may register ahead of time by calling Powell at (620)-363-0080, or participants may register at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday.
