Sophisticated Rose has come full circle in the clothing that it offers.
When the store opened in 1984 on the south side of the Iola square as Fashion Crossroads, it offered a variety of bridal attire and tuxedoes and gowns for prom. Today, as Sophisticated Rose, the store is stocked with frilly dresses, University of Kansas and Kansas State University logo clothing and onesies for newborns through size 6X. Baptismal gowns also are in stock.
Sophisticated Rose relocated to 19 S. Jefferson Ave. in 1999.
“Opening our children’s department has been a great asset for my store. In the spring I plan to expand the size of clothing from size 7 to 14,” said Jan Knewtson, owner.
For the young mother who doesn’t want a diaper bag with little ducks on it, Sophisticated Rose carries Kalencom diaper bags in a variety of colors and animal prints.
Wooden toys by Melissa and Doug range from puzzles to wooden dolls resembling paper dolls to a standing art easel for the budding young artist.
Handbags have proven to be a big seller for the store, as are candles and picture frames.
For those who want to spruce up their holiday table there are a variety of place mats, tableware and Rada Knives, which are made of surgical quality, high carbon stainless steel. Local church cookbooks also are available.
Beyond clothing, Sophisticated Rose also carries a variety of memorabilia from KU and KSU ranging from plates to figurines to handbags.
For the bargain hunter there is a rack of children’s clothing and women’s jackets that have been discounted for the holiday season.
The store is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
