Paul Sorenson’s volunteer handiwork is in high demand these days.
The retiree is making signs for four county offices involved with the Southeast Kansas Health Department.
Sorenson painted a sign for the Allen County office three years ago, after a visit for a flu shot.
“I’m not sign painter, but I can do better than that,” Sorenson said referrring to the department’s original sign. He took the time to craft a sign for the building and mounted it at the 221 S. Jefferson location.
Then it was the other counties’ turn.
After seeing Sorenson’s work, the health departments in Woodson, Bourbon and Anderson Counties wanted one of their own.
Since he had the original design, Sorenson decided he could recreate the original in high-quality format. He took on the project, deciding he would use only local labor.
The printing and design was done through Elizabeth Donnelly at The Shirt Shop. The pre-painted aluminum was purchased and cut at Dale’s Sheet Metal. Carl LaGalle, Iola, crafted the wood frames and the paint, primer and screws came from Diebolt Lumber. The plastic cover for the signs was bought through Iola Glass.
Sorenson took care of the design, painting and assembly.
“It’s not as easy as it sounds,” Sorenson said.
The SEK Health Department couldn’t be any more appreciative. Chief Nursing Officer DeeDee Martin said the signs were much needed in other counties, and Sorenson did not hesitate to donate the time and materials to craft the signs.
Sara Frederick, chief financial officer, said the health department appreciates the time Sorenson has put into the work.
“Everybody loves them,” she said. “He’s very gracious.”
Sorenson deflected the comment right back, of course.
“It’s very nice to do something for an organization that is so appreciative,” he said.
