GARNETT — Emergency crews rescued a subject trapped in a grain cart in rural Anderson County Tuesday morning.

It  took about 20 minutes from the first distress call shortly after 11:30 a.m. to free the trapped subject, whose name was not released.

The Anderson County Sheriff’s Department reported the rescue efforts included applying a tourniquet to stem severe bleeding.

The subject was taken via ambulance to Anderson County Hospital, and then flown via helicopter to a trauma center in the Kansas City metro area.

“This incident highlights the importance of rapid and accurate information flow,” Chelsey D’Albini, Anderson County Communications Center Director, said in a news release. “Our dispatchers coordinated multiple agencies, requested the air ambulance, and ensured resources were mobilized quickly. That early coordination was a critical link in the chain of survival.”

“This was true teamwork,” Anderson County Sheriff Wes McClain agreed. “From deputies jumping in to provide immediate aid, to EMS and rescue personnel coordinating the extrication and transport, everyone had one mission: save a life. Today’s response proves the strength of our emergency system in Anderson County.”

The subject’s condition was not immediately available.

It marks the second time in a little over a month Anderson County personnel have helped with a farm emergency. On Aug. 7, crews from several agencies worked in league to free a farmer who had fallen into a grain bin north of LaHarpe.

Locals credited the use of metal dividers provided by Anderson County as one of the key tools in the extrication.
