Summer’s unofficial kickoff gets underway with swimming pools in Iola, Humboldt and Yates Center opening this weekend.
Opening Day in Iola is set for Monday, with pool managers Sam Fager and Sydney Shelby overseeing a crew of 16 lifeguards.
Humboldt’s pool also opens Monday with its annual free swim day.
Yates Center’s opening day is set for Sunday.
All three pools were able to avoid labor shortages that have threatened other municipal pools across the state.
In Wichita, for example, the city announced earlier this month it was going to have to consider closing some of its pools on certain days because of a lack of lifeguards.
However, a recent wave of applications have lessened that concern, KSN TV reported this week.
Several area businesses and residents in Iola have once again stepped forward to sponsor free pool days through the summer, beginning on June 6. A total of 16 days have been sponsored, in which donors cover the cost of many of the swimmers.
Otherwise, daily admission during open swim sessions are $2 for those ages 6-6-4, and free of charge for those 5 and under and 65 and older.
