Allen County commissioners said Tuesday they would name trustees for a new Allen County Hospital after the Nov. 2 election — if results go as they hope. A quarter-cent countywide sales tax to finance construction of a new Allen County Hospital, is at issue.
Commissioners compared lists of seven candidates each compiled from those who had expressed interest. Among volunteers is Gordon Conger, a former commissioner, who stopped by their meeting to make himself available.
The commissioners have several names in common on their lists, said Commissioner Dick Works. Comparison was done informally minutes ahead of when commissioners convened their meeting. They may develop a master list, which likely will lead to interviews, at next Tuesday’s meeting.
Chairman Gary McIntosh said selection of trustees would take into consideration gender, age and a geographical mix of the county.
Trustees will be involved in final design work, help oversee construction and develop a management strategy that will involve selection of chief operating and financial officers. A management firm, such as Hospital Corporation of America, may be employed. HCA has managed the hospital for-profit the past five years.
HCA’s contract includes a six-month termination clause, which may be exercised by it or the county. County initiation would lead to a buyout of HCA’s equity if the sales tax is approved.
While the county owns the hospital and will continue to, commissioners are eager to give management responsibilities to trustees and whomever they select to provide professional expertise.
