In a month or so, anyone headed west from Iola on U.S. 54 will find the going slow.
Daren Petrowski, a Kansas Department of Transportation representative, told Allen County commissioners Tuesday preventive maintenance was planned on the highway’s surface between Iola and Yates Center. The bridge over Owl Creek, two miles east of Yates Center, is scheduled for work as is the viaduct over railroad tracks a mile east of Yates Center.
The highway also will get a new layer of asphalt overlay between Yates Center and Eureka, with work starting about July 1.
Concrete patching is planned for U.S. 169 south of Iola, starting this week, and is likely to take a while. Workers will be limited to 40 hours a week to avoid overtime.
TWO SHERIFF’S Department 2007 Chevrolet pickup trucks and a 2005 Ford car were sold by sealed bids.
The trucks, fetching $14,314 for the pair, went to Chicago (Ill.) Motors and Iolan Penny Cooper had the winning bid for the car at $1,280.
County Clerk Sherrie Riebel presented Cheyanna Colborn, a Humboldt High senior, with a $500 scholarship from the Kansas County Clerks and Election Officials organization. Colborn will attend Allen Community College and then Kansas State University, where she intends to pursue a major in journalism.
