In Tuesday’s edition of The Iola Register it was reported that the USD 257 Board of Education was proposing a 2-mill increase for the 2012-2013 budget. That number is incorrect.

The correct increase in millage from fiscal year 2012 to the proposed fiscal year 2013 is .765. While the rate went up 1.363 mills from 2011 to 2012, there is no proposal that has been put forward that would seek to raise the tax rate 2 mills in the upcoming budget.

For taxpayers the .765 increase is what district staff thought was absolutely needed. In fact, the district managed to be fiscally responsible in some of the specific categories of the budget to the point where they were able to propose such a minor increase. To put the increase into perspective, a person living in the USD 257 district who owns a home appraised at $100,000 in value would pay roughly $30 more in taxes this coming year.

This increase is independent of city, township, county or Allen Community College millage taxes.
