The annual Pinewood Derby by local Cub and Boy Scouts was Sunday afternoon at Allen County Community College.
Going at it in foursomes, the boys placed their race cars at the starting gates of the shiny aluminum race track to streak to the finish line 25 feet away.
Most races featured at least one race car reaching the theoretical speed of 220 miles per hour, or more.
All cars were of the same weight and length, assured by scales and tape measure on entry, and most were aerodynamically designed with front ends sloping to a point. Occasionally a few thousandths of a second made the difference in placing.
Overall winner for the pack was Jeremy Waldman. The second-place car was entered by Brett Willis and third by Seth Lieberman.
Divisional winners:
Tiger Cubs: Jack White, first; Wyatt Westervelt, second; Brennen Nuessen, third.
Wolf Cubs: Brett Willis, first; Seth Lieberman, second; Kaden Griffeth, third.
Bear Cubs: Skyler Suchy, first; William Francis, second; Derek Smith, third.
First-year Webelos: River Hess, first; Michael Young, second; Royce Smith, third.
Second-year Webelos: Jeremy Waldman, first; Spencer Ames, second; Sean Lewis, third.
At the conclusion of the Scout races, an Outlaw Class race was open to anyone, including adults. Samantha Dietrich’s car was first, followed by Jasmine Adair’s and Dean Dietrich’s.
