On Thursday evening, customers and vendors brought tomatoes of all shapes and sizes to compete in the Allen County Farmers Market’s first tomato contest on the southwest corner of the Iola square.
Judges were Gary Kilgore, retired Kansas State University Extension agronomy specialist, David Tidd, Allen County Farm Bureau director, and Carla Nemecek, KSU Extension agriculture agent. The judges considered taste, texture and appearance for the quality categories and weight and appearance for the fun categories.
The winners from 25 entries were: Best red tomato, Virginia Aubert; best yellow tomato and best cherry tomato, Frank Clubine; best grape tomato and smallest ripe tomato, John and Linda Baker; and heaviest tomato, weirdest tomato and People’s Choice, Steve Slater.
Awards were sponsored by the Allen County Conservation District.
