The year will end with an excess of moisture, which is a statistical aside to what in the past several weeks has become one of the drier falls in recent years.
Through 7 a.m. today 42.54 inches of moisture has been measured in Iola. Annual average is 37.74 inches. A chance of rain, freezing rain or snow — it’s that time of year — is in the forecast for later this week.
The mini-drought started after .30 of an inch of rain fell on Nov. 12. Since then, 39 days, only a trace of moisture has been recorded a couple of times.
September didn’t portend the dry fall. During that month 9.68 inches fell. October’s total was .74 of an inch; November’s 1.75 inches, with 1.25 coming on the 13th.
The average for December is 1.46 inches; only a trace on the 11th has occurred.
