Francis (Frank) J. Gibbons, son of Sarah and Frank Gibbons of Humboldt, was born Aug. 11, 1922.
He passed away on Aug. 1, 2016, at Richmond Rehabilitation Center at the age of 93.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Alice, and a brother, Patrick.
His sister, Forcine Callaway, resides in Iola.
He married Alice Joan Barnes in 1942. They had three children, Frankie, Linda and Johnnie.
Francis entered the military, serving in Europe in World War II. He was awarded a Meritorious Citation, Belgian Decoration and Commendations from the 29th Air Force and the 102nd Infantry. He had four battle stars and three gold service bars. He saw action in Normandy, northern France and the Battle of the Bulge, Rhineland and central Europe.
He was a lifetime member of the Survivors of the Battle of the Bulge. He worked for Heathman Oil Company for 15 years, and later owned and operated Gibbons Auto Salvage for 22 years after Alice’s death.
A private graveside service has been held at Highland Cemtery in Iola.
