Joan Barnby, 87, Horseshoe Bay, Texas, passed away Saturday, Nov. 5, 2016. She was born to George and Pearl (Conley) Sponseller on Oct. 24, 1929, in Iola.
In her early years of marriage, Joan worked for Hallmark Cards in Kansas City in silk screening during the time Glenn was serving his country in Korea. She also provided child care in the home for pre-kindergartners, and later loved her time working at Jody’s Attic. Her most beloved job though was being a wife, mother and homemaker. She enjoyed fishing, traveling, drawing, antiques, playing bridge and other card games, puzzles, Sudoku and reading. She also contributed her time to raising money for the Cancer Society, March of Dimes, and many other charities as well as working at election voting polls. She loved gardening, pansies being her favorite flower.
Mrs. Barnby is survived by her husband of 67 years, Glenn, Horseshoe Bay, whom she met at a skating rink; a daughter, Amy Phillips and husband Randy, Converse, Texas; a son, Mark Barnby and wife Tanya, Horseshoe Bay; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
Joan is preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Susan A. Barnby; brothers, Marvin, Harvey, Glenn and Larry; and sisters, Florence, Alberta and Francis.
