Visitation for Edwin J. “Ed” Nord of Iola, whose death on Friday was reported in Friday’s Register, will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapel in Iola.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Humboldt United Methodist Church. The Rev. Debby Dick will officiate. Burial, with military honors, will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Humboldt.
He was born June 3, 1920, at Milan, Mo., to Joseph Martin and Neville Sperry (McNeiley) Nord. He grew up in Utah until age 11 when the family returned to Milan. He attended Oak Grove Rural School and graduated from Milan High School. He worked at First National Bank in Milan.
On June 8, 1941, he married Lois Dean Murphy in Lancaster, Mo. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served two years in the Pacific and was part of the Naval Seabees. Following an honorable discharge from the service, he attended the University of Missouri at Columbia receiving his degree in 1949.
The couple moved to Humboldt where he worked for Monarch Cement Company for 37 years. She died Feb. 22, 1991.
On June 25, 1994, he married Donna R. (Ostrander) Lower at Humboldt United Methodist Church. They made their home in Iola.
He traveled extensively spending winters in Texas and Hawaii for 14 years. He read his Bible daily, liked to sketch and was a University of Kansas and Kansas City Chiefs fan.
He was a member of Humboldt United Methodist Church where he served as a lay leader, Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent, church trustee for more than 30 years, started United Methodist Men, sang in the choir and brought the message from time to time. He was also a member of American Legion, McDonald’s Coffee Bunch, Naval Seabees 3rd Battalion Reunion Group and former longtime member of Humboldt Rotary Club.
He is survived by his wife of the home; two children, Sally Ballenberg and her husband, Bill, North Brunswick, N.J., and Randall Nord, Indianapolis, Ind.; three stepchildren, Pam Powers and her husband, Ron, and Terry Lower and his wife, Lisa, Iola, and Lisa Riebel and her husband, Fred, Humboldt; two grandchildren, Lesley-Anne Kemper and Joshua Nathaniel Ballenberg; one great-granddaughter; nine stepgrandchildren; and one stepgreat-granddaughter.
A brother, Mac Dee, died earlier.
