Richard Dean Tice, born in 1926 to Charles and Evelyn “Nellie” Tice (Fisk), Chanute, departed to his heavenly home on Thursday, Dec. 22, 2011, with his daughter by his side, in Humboldt.
After graduating in 1944 from Chanute High School, Richard joined the U.S. Army, assigned to the Special Service Section, 257st Division Service Command Division, Fort Belvoir, Va. Honorably discharged in 1946, Richard completed his Associate’s Degree at Neosho County Community College. Richard studied opera and theatre in Hollywood, Calif., in the 1950s. He performed in plays such as “The Father of the Bride.” His comedic timing and stage demeanor were akin to Donald O’Connor. He also possessed an amazing tenor voice.
Venturing to Kansas City in the 1960s Richard married the love of his life Phoebe Ann (Welch) Tice Bax in 1961.
From 1962 to 64 Richard was the general manager for Fred Harvey Restaurants in Kansas City, Mo., and for Fred Harvey, at The Harlequin Room and Harvey House Grill in Chicago.
Richard’s chef career encompassed work at Putsch’s Coffee House and Putsch’s 210 on the Country Club Plaza, Kansas City, Mo., to opening new restaurants for Waid’s Restaurants. In the 1970s, he was the executive chef for Weight Watchers of greater Kansas City. Retiring in the early 1990s Richard became involved in the Chanute Library, Art Gallery and the Chanute Community Theatre, as well as a vocal letter to the editor “contributor.”
Richard was a good and faithful member of AA since 1982.
He is survived by his only child, Jorjann Tice Chezem, and grandsons, Kyle and Zachary.
Richard will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by a host of family and friends. At Richard’s request there will be no formal service.
Memorial remembrance for Richard who devotedly followed the teachings of Church of Christ, Scientist, can be to pray for the world. The world needs our prayer.
