September 1984

Bill May, 35, Hamburg, Iowa, was hired as executive director of Allen County Hospital last night. May expects to begin his duties in about 60 days. Until then, Frank Luddington, the hospital’s interim director, will be in charge. In other business, Luddington told the community hospital board that approval had been granted for the Moran Medical Clinic which will be operated by Drs. Brian D. Wolfe and Glen Singer.

Dr. Harry M. Stephenson, veteran Iola dentist, died in his sleep Saturday night at his home at 212 S. Colborn at the age of 84. He and his wife, Hope, went fishing Saturday — he caught a big one — and had showed no sign of illness when he went to bed. His wife discovered his death in the morning when she attempted to wake him.

The Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant on South State Street is being remodeled and enlarged. Workers are also near completion of the Town and Country convenience store at the intersection of Highways 54 and 169 on State Street and are building a Hardee’s restaurant at the north edge of the Iola Plaza Shopping Center on North Street which they expect to complete in early October.

About 30 balcony seat tickets remained at press time for the Glenn Miller Band performance at the Bowlus Fine Arts Center.

Patrons of District 257 may be asked to help school officials decide whether to seek passage of a bond issue to build a new high school or renovate and add to existing facilities. The board listened to two presentations from architects last night on those alternatives.

SEK-CAP Inc. has entered into a contract with the Kansas Department of Transportation to provide rural transportation to the elderly in Allen and six other area counties. SEK-CAP received a grant of $286,252 from the U.S. Department of Transportation to fund the program.
