[Readers’ forum] The many problems with Iola

opinions

1. I, for one, was glad to see that the rails to trails hasn’t gone any farther south than it has. There is not enough use of it anyway. Maybe farther north, but I sure don’t see it in our county.
If you really want to waste money, hire someone to count the people that use the trail. This would be an hourly job from daylight to dark. Half a million is way too much to take it on south anyway.
2. Another thing that was brought up was a dog park to let people walk their dogs. Who would be responsible for the lawsuits if someone was bitten or for dog fights? Who would keep the droppings, etc., cleaned up and keep the grounds maintained and sanitary?
I have a dog and like animals. I walk mine around my yard.
3. Our hospital: were people not told that it was constructed so another floor could be added above the other two floors?
The patient load is usually very low. Most of the time the second floor isn’t used. If new and modern machines are needed to attract doctors and nurses, remodel the old hospital.
How come a lot of our people go to Chanute, Fort Scott and Garnett? Do they have better equipment?
It takes very special people to work in hospitals and nursing homes. How does our payscale compare to other hospitals? We are fortunate to have a hospital and don’t need a new one.
4. We have a nice swimming pool, but local people and contractors have stated that the city and taxpayers got ripped off for what it cost for our small pool. There is too much concrete around the pool.
Could and should have had a larger swimming area. Two million dollars is quite a lot. The way the economy is we shouldn’t be spending all this money unless absolutely necessary.
5. And look at all of our taxes. Could these be some of the faults for our population decrease?
I’m sure I’ve stepped on some toes, but let’s not see if we can spend more than Obama. If we don’t get to the point where we can’t survive with the way things are it will surprise me. If we don’t stand up for what we want and believe in, it’s our own fault. Voice your opinions. We may not get anywhere, but we can at least try.
Thanks to Craig Abbott for saying no on some issues. Hooray to Gary Hoffmeier. Keep smiling.

Respectfully,
