In the last week two concerned citizens, Mary Kay Heard and Donna Houser, have contacted the Register to express their dismay that the Kansas Arts Commission may be eliminated by Gov. Sam Brownback, despite the support of its continued funding by the Kansas Legislature.
Through his privilege as governor, Brownback has the authority to ax the KAC.
This doesn’t deter such stalwarts as Heard and Houser who have contacted the governor’s office by both e-mail and with phone calls.
“I just called and spoke with a nice gentleman regarding funding for the arts and their importance to Iola,” said Heard. “I told the guy how important the Bowlus Fine Arts Center has been to recruiting industries such as Russell Stovers and Gates Rubber. The Governor has been big on industry, so I thought that might help. I wish everyone would call!”
Brownback’s office can be reached at governor@ks.gov or by phone at 877-579-6757.
