AMES, Iowa — Breaking school records is becoming something of a habit for Allen Community College indoor track athletes this season. IN OTHER men’s action, Michael Burns took sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 13.52 meters, while Rickcardo Bailey and Chris Donald took 14th and 17th, respectively, in the 400-meter dash. Gabby Ruiz and Terika Henry, who both set school marks one week earlier in their 3000-meter and 200-meter races, respectively, now own the best marks in ACC history at two other distances.
Henry placed 12th in the 400-meter dash, with a time of 57.86 seconds, while Ruiz took 18th in the 5000-meter run, with a time of 18 minutes, 6.18 seconds.
On the men’s side, Dakota Parker sliced 20 seconds off the school record in the 3000-meter run. He finished 29th with a time of 8:43.02.
The school records went down at the Iowa State Classic Friday in Ames, where ACC competed against almost exclusively Division I, four-year schools.
“We were very happy with our athletes’ performances,” ACC head coach Vince DeGrado said.
Allen took a select group of athletes to Ames — junior college athletes had to be invited to participate. The rest stayed behind to continue preparations for the upcoming Region VI championships Friday in Lawrence.
“We would like to see some conference and region champions out of this group,” DeGrado said.
Assistant coach Tony Davis, who works primarily with Allen’s sprinters, jumpers and hurdlers, said Davis controlled the beginning of her race.
“Terika competed with some edge,” Davis said. “She is showing promise for the upcoming outdoor season.”
Likewise, DeGrado said Ruiz competed at full throttle from start to finish in the 5000.
“She was running at a 17:40 to 17:50 pace most of the race,” DeGrado said. “She hesitated moving up to the next pack of runners at the two-mile mark, which might have cost her that chance to break 18 minutes, but she understands where she was, and next time will change things.”
DeGrado noted Parker also has a golden opportunity to break his new school mile record.
“We both knew he left some time out on the track,” DeGrado said. “Instead of going with the lead pack, he stayed with the chase pack, which cost him seconds” perhaps a chance to run as low 8:40. “That race is one you just have to get reps on in order to understand the change of pace.”
Bailey’s 400 time was 49.21 seconds. Donald was just behind at 49.47 seconds. Both were season-best marks.
“Rickcardo and Chris both had solid races,” assistant coach Tony Davis said. “We are making great strides heading into the region and conference meet.”
Bruce Barclay finished 15th in the 60-meter hurdles, at 8.4 seconds.
“Bruce looked great in the warmups, and beat everybody to the first hurdle, but quickly lost some ground due to technical mistakes,” Davis said.
Tucker Morgan also was well on his way to a lofty finish in the 1-mile run, “until he had his shoe ripped off after the 1000-meter mark,” DeGrado said.
Even so, Morgan ran the mile in 4:31.59, good for 35th.
Tegan Michael ran the 800 meters in 2:02.74, good for 39th.
“Tegan is feeling the effects of not being able to train for two weeks due to an injury,” DeGrado said.
