ARKANSAS CITY — A double-overtime victory Wednesday has Allen Community College’s women at a historic high.
Kyleigh Rowe’s goal on a cross from Lexi Godlove gave the Red Devils a critical 2-1 victory over Cowley Community College.
With the victory, Allen (7-7 overall and 5-5 in Region VI play) has seven wins for the first time in the history of the women’s program.
More importantly, Allen now has 15 points, just two behind Independence in the battle for the final seed in the Region VI playoffs.
It just so happens Allen will host Independence in a match Tuesday.
“The girls are thrilled about the opportunity,” head coach Jeremy McGinnis said. “We needed this win after our game at Dodge.”
On Sunday, the Red Devils led Dodge City late in the second half before giving up the tying goal in regulation and the winning goal in overtime in a 2-1 defeat.
The Red Devils rebounded with some familiar faces leading the way.
Godlove took a perfectly placed pass from Kristen Tainatongo, which led to a breakaway goal for Allen’s first tally against Cowley.
“We had some great opportunities in the second half,” McGinnis said. “Rowe had one shot off the cross bar, another off the side post. I thought after those missed, we might be in trouble.”
Instead, the Red Devils continued their sterling defense in front of goalkeeper Keelie Arbuckle, who registered five saves.
It looked like the teams were headed for a tie until Rowe’s goal sent the Red Devils home on a high note.
“You could tell in the girls’ eyes they really wanted this win,” McGinnis said. “It was an awesome way to finish that game.”
