HIGHLAND — The road continues to be inhospitable for Allen Community College’s softball team.
The Red Devils dropped their eighth and ninth straight road games Wednesday to start the 2013 season.
Host Highland downed Allen 12-1 in the opener and 14-1 in the nightcap.
Allen’s long-awaited home debut is Friday afternoon with a doubleheader against Brown Mackie of Salina. First pitch is at 3 p.m. The Red Devils turn around for two more at home against Cloud Saturday, starting at noon.
The Cougars got the quick jump in Wednesday’s opener, scoring three in the bottom of the first before pounding out eight in the second to erase any doubt.
Allen’s only hit, conversely, was a leadoff single by designated hitter Lauren Poertner in the fifth. Stormie Bush reached on a walk two batters later, but both were stranded.
Audra Nelson got the start, giving up six and four walks in 1 1/3 innings. Kaitlyn Rasch pitched 2 2/3 innings, giving up six hits with a strikeout.
A nine-run third inning did the trick for Highland in the finale, breaking open a 3-1 lead.
The nine-spot followed Allen’s only run of the day, courtesy of Taylor Easum’s leadoff home run to start the third frame.
Annie Gentry followed Easum’s blast with a single, but she was stranded on third.
The Red Devils put together two more hits in the fourth, back-to-back singles by Gentry and Shayla Stephens, but both were stranded.
Rasch started and gave up 13 hits with a strikeout. She gave up 12 runs, but only four were earned. Melissa Davidson gave up two hits and two walks in 1 1/3 innings, with one strikeout.
Highland pounded out six home runs on the day, four in the second contest.
