LEXINGTON, Mo. — Allen Community College’s volleyball team was on the winning end of a five-set match with Wentworth Military Academy Monday.
Allen lost the first set, 25-16.
“The Red Dragons took a quick lead on us early in the first set, challenging our defense with deep corner balls,” coach Jessica Peters said.
In the second set, ACC’s Red Devils won 25-21. After taking a timeout with the score at 24-21, middle hitter Danielle McElroy struck a kill for the second-set win.
The Red Devils kept the momentum coming, taking the third set, 25-15. Peters said libero Halley Scott suffered an injury early on, but played through it knowing she was a key to the team’s success.
Allen sputtered in the third set.
“With only one more win needed to claim the match, Allen played a point-for-point cooperative offensive game,” Peters said. “We couldn’t find the ball as blockers, we couldn’t break away with point runs and we couldn’t get hands on balls at the net.”
Allen lost the set, 25-17, which forced the fifth set. Peters said that Allen made smart decisions and took advantage of Wentworth’s mistakes in the 15-12 victory to secure the win.
Andonae Magdziarz led the Red Devils with 12 kills, hitting .206. Scott was a force keeping the ball in the air, recording 45 digs. Raquel West had 21 assists, while Madi Maguire earned 17 of her own.
Allen (2-2) heads to Hesston Wednesday. The team’s first tournament of the year is this weekend in Marshallltown, Iowa.
