Jessica Peters wants to see her Allen Community College volleyball squad earn a repeat trip to the regional tournament.
Even with only three players returning from last year’s 23-15 team, Peters will count on a large group of incoming freshmen to contribute immediately.
“Those are definitely expectations we have set and would like to reach again,” Peters said. “We would like to see a winning season, and we want to see ourselves in the top six.”
Even with young players replacing graduating sophomores, Peters said the team will be competitive.
“We strive to be competitive in  a conference competitive within itself,” Peters said. “Expectations would be to play every match day-by-day.”
Halley Scott, a defensive specialist and libero, is one of the key returning players.
“A libero’s role is to remain in the back row the entire time,” Peters said.
Andonae Magdziarz also is returning, but will be switching positions.
“She will be transitioning into an outside hitter for us,” Peters said. “She was a middle-hitter for us last year. We are really looking forward to her vocal leadership on the court.”
Sarah Webb, a middle-hitter, is the final returning sophomore.
“She’s going to be a force at the net for us in blocking and in hitting,” Peters said. “We are very young; that seems to be the trend this year with Allen Athletics.”
Nine freshmen fill out the roster.
“Our two setters are going to make a big impact for us, which would be Raquel West and Madi Maquire,” Peters said. “Whether we run a 6-2 or 5-1 offense, they are definitely key roles to that success.”
Peters said Danielle McElory and Carly Jackson will be offensive options as well. The starting lineup remains unsettled.
Freshmen Jessica Politt and Sarah Kahle have battled injuries already.
“I do think they will be able to contribute very effectively when back,” Peters said.
Mary Hobbs, Roxy Foster and Kayleigh Roberts round out the team. Foster plays right-side, Hobbs is versatile and Roberts is expected to challenge Scott at libero.
The team is in El Dorado today for a scrimmage. The Red Devils will host Longview Community College at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 25 for their season-opener.
“I have been here long enough,” Peters said, “to know the community knows what type of program Whitney (Falkenstien) and I are trying to establish for the women’s volleyball team.”
