COFFEYVILLE — Allen Community College found itself traveling a familiar road Wednesday, in more ways than one.
The Red Devils were in Coffeyville for the second time in four days, facing the host Red Ravens after competing over the weekend at the Coffeyville Spikefest.
And much like several of their tournament matches, the Red Devils started quickly, but this time beat their tendency to falter in the second and third sets.
Trailing 2 sets to 1, the Red Devils bounced back to win a thrilling fourth set, 25-23, then captured the tiebreaker, 15-11, to secure the match.
Allen’s 25-23, 18-25, 14-25, 25-23, 15-11 victory put the Red Devils at 17-10 overall and 4-3 in Region VI and Jayhawk Conference play.
The key, Allen head coach Jessica Peters said, was the Red Devils’ response to falling behind.
“We literally gave away sets 2 and 3 on serve receive errors, attack errors and serving errors,” Peters said. “It forced us to admit that we just needed to let go and play.”
Halley Scott spearheaded the fourth-set comeback with a seven-point service run. Lizzy Huey and Adriee Munoz each put together three-point runs in the tiebreaker.
“If we broke the stats down by attacks per set, you see that Andonae (Magdziarz), Sidney (Keith) and Lizzy all became effective for us in set 4, with 20 total kills. They remained effective in the fifth set, with 10 total kills, with Huey sealing the fifth-set win with a kill. What a match!”
Keith led the way with 18 kills to go with 14 digs, a pair of solo blocks and 21.5 points overall. Magdziarz followed with 14 kills, while Huey had 13 kills, two solo blocks and 16.5 points. Munoz had 44 set assists. Sarah Charbonneau had 26 digs. Scott had 17 digs.
The Red Devils will travel to Chanute Friday and Saturday for a tournament hosted by Neosho County Community College. On Friday, Allen takes on Oklahoma Baptist University’s “Green” team at 2 p.m. and Fort Scott at 6 o’clock.
Allen faces Seminole Community College at 10 a.m. Saturday, and OBU’s “Black” team at 2 p.m.
