Allen County Community College’s Firestarters saved their best performance of the year when it counted. The dance team competed in the 2010 Power Dance Nationals, March 12-14, in Galveston, Texas.
Allen County claimed the second-place trophy in the open hip-hop category.
“I’m really proud of the team. We worked hard and walked away with a great experience,” said Mindy Covey, ACCC dance and cheer coach.
“They really enjoyed the routine and each other this year. It showed in their performance at nationals.”
Members of the Firestarters are Jullea Decker of Bronson, Stephanie Garlock of Rossville, McKenzie Cusic of Leon, Christopher Hayes of Girard, Kierra McDonald of Chicago, Ill., and Mandy Hug of Mayetta.
Covey said the team was judged twice — once in preliminaries worth 25 percent of its final score and in Sunday’s finals worth 75 percent of the final score. The Firestarters won the national hip-hop championship in 2009.
