ACCC women’s skid continues

FORT SCOTT — Allen County Community College’s Red Devil women can’t live with prosperity. The Red Devils had a six-point lead with two minutes left in the first half Wednesday against Fort Scott Community College’s Greyhounds.
The Red Devils saw their hosts go on a 23-1 scoring surge that reached into the second half. Allen County was up 21-20 at intermission but never got on track in the second half until it was too late.
Fort Scott was up 25-22 when ACCC head coach Marcus Hicks got back-to-back technical fouls and was ejected from the game. Jolee Sharp, who had a triple double for the Greyhounds, sank four technical foul shots and a teammate hit a three-pointer.
The Red Devils did battle back, coming from 18 points down to within seven, 46-39. The Greyhounds answered from there and put away a 58-41 win.
Allen County went nine minutes without scoring. A field goal by Nicole Swick at the 13-minute mark of the second half broke the drought. Queona Walker hit one of two free throws to make it 40-25.
Walker finished with 10 points and Rackell Goldson, who hit four three-point field goals in the game, had 13 points for ACCC.
The Red Devils shot 31 percent, 14 of 45, from the field but sank only seven of 21 free throws.
Sharp paced the Greyhounds, coming off the bench for 24 points, 12 steals and 10 rebounds. Sharp was 10 of 12 from the free-throw line as the Hounds cashed in on 20 of 30 attempts. Fort Scott hit at a 40-percent clip, 18 of 45, from the field.
Allen County’s Swick had seven rebounds and two assists. Walker and Kynesha Nisbett each had two assists. Danielle Best made four steals.
The Red Devils dropped their 15th game in a row and are 0-7 in Jayhawk Eastern Division play. They are 2-16 overall. Assistant coach Sacha Santimano directed the Red Devils in the second half Wednesday,
Allen County hosts NJCAA Division I fourth-ranked Independence Saturday for a 6 p.m. tipoff in the ACCC gym.
Independence suffered its first loss of the season Wednesday, losing the battle for the top spot in the Jayhawk East 67-55 to Cowley County (7-0, 14-5). The Lady Pirates are 6-1 in conference and 18-1 overall.
