Allen athletes qualify for nationals

OVERLAND PARK — The indoor track season got off to a flying start Friday for Allen Community College.
Seven Red Devil athletes have qualified for nationals, and two school records were set at the Cavalier Invitational, hosted by Johnson County Community College.
“We’re very happy with where we are,” Red Devil head coach Vince DeGrado said. “We were able to see some other schools we’ll be competing with at regionals and in the conference meet. We think we stack up well.”
Despite not entering a full squad, the Red Devils brought home plenty of hardware.
Vanessa Style and Elesha Alyn both qualified for nationals in the 60-meter hurdles. Style won with a time of 8.98 seconds. Alyn was third at 9.32 seconds.
Bruce Barclay also was a national qualifier in the men’s 60m hurdles, winning with a time of 8.16 seconds.
Barclay and Style broke indoor school records with their hurdles times.
Rodrick Simmons and Deandre Henderson finished second and third, respectively, in the 60-meter dash. Simmons’ time of 6.96 seconds and Henderson’s in 7.01 seconds both earned national bids with their marks.
Also qualifying were Thomas Broxterman, who finished fifth in the 1,000-meter run in 2 minutes, 38.99 seconds, and Markeen Caine, who was sixth at 2:39.09.
Other gold winners for Allen were Michael Burns in the long jump and Zack McCoy in the 500-meter run.
