OVERLAND PARK — Allen Community College made some school history Friday, picking up its first ever indoor track and field conference championship.
The Red Devil thinclads — men and women — racked up several individual conference and Region VI titles as well.
Even more impressively, the men’s team covered only 14 of the 20 events in taking first in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division title. Allen finished third in Region VI.
“I’m a little shocked. To be able to still get that many points,” ACC head coach Vince DeGrado said. “We’ve got something good going on here.”
The Red Devils swept the medal stand in three events, going 1-2-3 in the 1-mile, the 1000-meter and the 3000-meter runs.
Meanwhile, sprinters Terika Henry and Vanessa Styles were their usual stellar selves on the women’s side.
Henry is the Region VI and conference champion in the 60- and 200-meter dashes while Styles is region champion in the 60-meter hurdles.
With only a handful of competitors, the Red Devils were unable to field a full roster to challenge for the women’s team title.
But what ACC lacked in quantity, the school more than made up in quality.
“This was what Randy Weber (Allen’s former athletics director) and I had had in mind when I came back to Allen,” DeGrado said, “to develop into a premier track program if we could get the right coaching fit to go along with myself.”
Enter Tony Davis, whose work with ACC’s sprinters has helped quickly transform the Red Devils into an elite unit.
“This title is for that 2011-2012 team that came over with me and got this going,” DeGrado said. “I can’t tell you how much I wanted to win for them. This was for my wife, her family and this Iola community who have taken in these athletes and have supported us throughout this process. We couldn’t have done this without their support.
“It isn’t just Tony and I out there coaching,” he continued. “We’ve had a lot of good help along the way from everybody. These titles reflect everybody who has believed in us. That is why this entire run is so special, because we’ve been able to share this with everybody. However, our eye is still on the outdoor season. That is where we plan on making our biggest splash.”
First things first.
Allen’s athetes are heading to New York City for the NJCAA Indoor National Championships March 7-8.
The outdoor track season begins the following week with the Southwestern Invite March 13 in Winfield.

Allen’s individual results follow.
