Allen County middle schools complete week 3 of competition

This was week 3 for middle school sports in Allen County, here is the round up from Thursday’s action: 

 

Iola

Football

The seventh-grade Ponies rebound from last week’s crushing defeat against Fort Scott with a 14-8 win over Anderson County. Cole Mathes led the Ponies with 107 yards rushing on 15 carries along with a touchdown. Mathes’ lead blocker Cortland Carson picked up 59 total yards, with 47 coming on the ground. Quarterback Kyser Nemecek threw for 48 yards (4-6) along with a rushing touchdown of his own. Dresden Ellis led the receiving corps with 25 yards receiving. 

After last week’s incomplete game that finished as a stalemate due to rain, the eighth-grade Ponies continued their winning ways with a 38-8 pounding over Anderson County. Mac Leonard led the ground attack with 63 yards rushing on five carries to go along with two rushing touchdowns. Drayden Reiter picked up 38 total yards and two rushing touchdowns, and Briggs Michael carried twice for 28 yards and a rushing touchdown of his own. 

Volleyball

The seventh-grade Ponies traveled to Pittsburg last night, and both C-and-A team picked up wins. The C team was led by Maya Shaughnessy’s precise serving. The win for the A team means they move to 4-3 on the season, with a 3-1 record in league play. The Ponies will be back in action on Monday at Iola High for a match against Prairie View. 

Iola’s eighth-grade squad was on the winning side once again, this time against Osawatomie. The A team won by scores of 25-18, 25-21, and 25-17. Jackie Fager led with a team high nine aces, and Rio Lohman was a force at the net picking up six kills along with three aces. Head coach Terri Carlin was impressed with the bench play of Maddy McVey, who provided four aces. 

The B bombers went 3-1 in their four sets, winning by scores of 25-18, 25-11, and 25-17. McVey was superb behind the line, picking up eight aces along with two assists and two kills. Rylie Olson had a great night with six aces, with one accounting for a match-winning ace. 

 

Humboldt

Football 

The Cubs moved to 2-0 on the season earning a 28-8 win over Fredonia. Quarterback Sam Hull earned 120 yards rushing on 11 carries along with a touchdown. Hull fits the term “dual threat,” as the Cubs field general added a 10-yard touchdown pass to receiver Skyler Harris. Blake Ellis had a great game on the ground for Humboldt, rumbling his way for 84 yards rushing on 15 carries to go along with a touchdown. Ellis and Hull also led the way on the defensive end, combining for 11 tackles. The Cubs created two turnovers, with an interception from Landon Bauer, and fumble recovery from Hull. 

Volleyball

The Lady Cubs played host to Fredonia on Thursday. The A team clinched a tough win, winning the first set 25-16, losing the second 25-23, but rallying for the match win in the final set by a slim margin of 15-13. Kenisyn Hottenstein led the Lady Cubs with six aces, and Ashlynn Works provided two kills.
