KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Allen Community College’s volleyball team was pushing all the right buttons Wednesday.
“We did exactly what a team is supposed to do on the road,” head coach Jessica Peters said. “We showed up. We were there with a purpose. Serving runs allowed us to hold the strings.”
But the Red Devils began taking things for granted after sweeping the first two sets over Kansas City, Kan.
Allen never found its mojo after that, either, dropping a 17-25, 26-28, 25-11, 25-12, 15-13 match to the Blue Devils.
“We had an incredibly shaky start to the third set, seeing performances that were completely out of character,” Peters said.
“The serve receive, which holds an unbelievable amount of weight in our game, couldn’t get back on track.”
And a handful of blocks by KCK prompted Allen’s front-line players to start tipping at the net instead of going for kills, which negated one of the Red Devils’ strengths.
“I honestly wish I had an excuse like a starter was injured, or the officiating was terrible, or they were the better team, but I don’t,” Peters said. “This was Allen’s match, this was our win, but this was not the result.”
Sidney Keith led the Red Devils with 12 kills and 12.5 points. Danielle Goodman followed with 11 kills and 11 points. Lizzy Huey had six kills and 9.5 points. Adriee Munoz had 21 set assists, while Sarah Charbonneau and Halley Scott had 33 and 18 digs, respectively. Ashlyn Myers had 13 assists.
Allen was at Bacone Friday and will visit Fort Scott at 6:30 p.m. Monday.
