Allen Community College will celebrate one of the most remarkable championship runs in program history when the College welcomes the 1996 Red Devil golf team into the Athletics Hall of Fame during a two‑day event Feb. 13–14.
Throughout the spring of 1996, few expected the Red Devils to climb to the top of the Region VI standings.
But over two cold, rainy and windy days at the regional tournament, the team delivered one of the greatest comebacks the conference had seen. After the opening round, Allen trailed the first‑place team by 21 strokes.
A dominant second‑round surge vaulted the Red Devils into a tie for the lead, and by the end of the third round they had completed the rally—finishing with a four‑man total of 1,001 to win the Region VI Championship.
The championship roster included:
• Travis Coffield (Iola) – 243, Region VI top medalist
• Dale Bowne (Emporia) – 245, Region VI runner‑up
• Jerrod Mullinex (Parsons) – 252
• Ryan Ross (Pittsburg) – 262
• Tony Perez (Humboldt) – 268
• Colin O’Brien
The team was coached by Kevin Pargman.
Both Coffield and Bowne qualified for the NJCAA national tournament, adding to the significance of the season and securing the 1996 squad’s place among Allen’s most accomplished teams.
The Hall of Fame induction will take place between the women’s and men’s basketball games on Saturday, Feb. 14. Women’s basketball hosts Fort Scott at 2 p.m., with the men’s game set for a 4 p.m. tipoff. Community members, alumni and supporters are encouraged to attend and celebrate the historic 1996 championship team.
The weekend begins Friday, Feb. 13, with a 7 p.m. social gathering at the original Rookie’s Sports Bar & Grill, 105 E. Jackson Ave. Saturday’s events include a campus tour and breakfast at 9:30 a.m. in the Allen gymnasium and team‑meet sessions with inductees at 11 a.m. Homecoming festivities will take place during halftime of the men’s basketball game. A closing social event is scheduled Saturday at 7 p.m. at the new Rookie’s Sports Bar & Grill on the square.
In addition to the 1996 golf team, Allen will induct five individuals into the 2026 Hall of Fame class:
