Allen Community College’s volleyball team started 2021 on a high note.

With the volleyball season pushed back from August and shortened considerably because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Red Devils had little trouble dispatching visiting Labette Community College Monday, winning 3 sets to 1.

Allen won the first set, 25-18, before Labette evened the match with a 26-24 victory.

“With many new faces on the court, there were a lot of first time jitters to start the match,” which led to an “ugly” start, ACC head coach Whitney said in an email.

While Allen struggled to string together much of an offensive attack in the set 2 defeat, the squad’s discipline paid off down the stretch.

Allen righted its ship with a 25-21 victory in the third set, and sealed the win, 25-17, in the clincher.

Adriana Santiago led the way with 17 kills, followed by Bethany Williams with 11.

Laia Jaca had 42 assists and 23 digs. Mattie Dougherty also had 23 digs.
