Allen Community College women’s basketball coach Leslie Crane has added four more players to the Red Devil roster for the 2022-23 season.
Crane, entering her second year at the helm at ACC, announced the quartet’s respective signings in a press release Wednesday.
Tonya Williams, a Myrtle Beach, S.C., point guard, will be joined by Jania Jones, a 6-2 center from Fivay High School in Hudson, Fla., and college transfers Britney Schroer and Shade Richardson.
“These four additions to our team have added more quality depth, strong leadership and experience, a desire to compete at a higher level plus expectations for success,” Crane said. “When you add these qualities to the team, it makes us not only better but a more highly competitive program in our tough conference.”
Williams attended Socastee High School, and utilizes her speed and “deceptive quickness” to wreak havoc on opposing guards, Crane said. Williams averaged 10 points and three steals a game.
“Tonya is a quick defender at the point position, who can slash to the glass and shoot the 3,” Crane said. “She has many weapons to score with and we are excited for the progress that Tonya will make in our system. She is a natural fit into our defensive system and will make the full court and perimeter defenses very effective and tough for our opponents.”
Jones averaged a double-double at Fivay, at 12 points and 10 rebounds.
“She is a strong rebounder with a good base of offensive scoring tools who will not shy away from any physicality,” Crane said. “I am very excited to have Jania join us this season because she was the final piece to our puzzle for this upcoming team. Not only will she be a strong scoring post offensively she will also give us a strong defensive presence with her shot blocking and the shots she will change with her length and timing. As Jania continues to get stronger and work on her game, she can become a real difference maker for our team.”
Schroer played at Chase County High School and then Barton County Community College, where she excelled at the power forward position.
“She was a big reason why her high school team went 20-4 her junior year and 16-6 her senior year and did well in postseason play,” Crane said. “Britney will be a welcome addition to our interior game this year. Not only will she help shore up the lane with her tough defense, her scoring abilities will continue our post game dominance. She brings a love for the game, dedication and a desire to improve plus real college experience to our Women’s program.”
Richardson, a Fort Lauderdale, Fla., native, also brings college experience to the team.
“Shade is bringing tough defensive intensity and quickness and speed to our perimeter,” Crane said. “Her defense fits into our system very well and she does a great job of getting the ball to the right person as well as scoring when she needs to. She averaged nine points, and eight rebounds in a tough high school conference so I see her making the adjustments needed to help make our team successful.”
In Crane’s inaugural season at Allen, she helped guide the Red Devils from a one-win season in 2020-21 to 10 last year.
