The third annual Iola Youth Track Meet drew more than 250 kids from across southeast Kansas.

With teams from Girard, Fredonia, Thayer and Cherryvale making the trip to Iola Saturday morning, Riverside Park’s parking lot was packed as athletes, fans and parents made their way to Mustang Stadium.

“A lot of the communities around us are starting track programs, so we got about 120 kids from that,” Iola Middle School athletic director Scott Brady said. “Plus, we have 135 kids from Iola and it makes for a pretty big meet. The Daugharthy family did the timing system, and they were a huge help today.”

While some athletes came into the competition as seasoned veterans, for others it was their first time seeing live competition. Many Iola athletes were among those seeing their first live action as part of a clinic introducing them to track and field.

“For Iola kids, it was all new to them. The coaches put on a couple of nights of clinics to try some things out,” Brady said.

“This was their first meet. For kids from other towns, they had been to a couple of meets. For our kids it was their first go, and a lot of learning on the fly, but from what I heard on the live-speaker they had a pretty good day.”
