Athletes make their marks in Humboldt

Humboldt's Drew Wilhite was a four-time gold medalist Thursday at the Humboldt Invitational Track Meet. Several other athletes, including a number of Iola junior varsity thinclads, also set high marks on the day.

HUMBOLDT — A number of area athletes showed off their track and field prowess at the Humboldt Invitational Thursday.

Leading the way was four-time gold medalist Drew Wilhite of Humboldt, who took first in the 400- and 800-meter runs, the high jump and the triple jump.

Teammate Maddox Johnson bested all comers in winning the discus, while Yates Center’s Austin Moffet claimed gold in the 3200-meter run and was second in the 1600.

On the girls’ side, Crest’s Ursula Billings captured two golds in the 1600 and 3200, respectively, and silver in the 800-meter run.

Marmaton Valley’s Janae Granere took was tops in the long jump and triple jump.

THE COMPETITION also featured a number of Iola High junior varsity competitors.

While the Mustangs and Fillies didn’t bring home many medals, they still set 16 personal records on the day.

“We may not get many top-six places, but the tough competition allows us to perform at higher levels, head coach Dana Daugharthy said.

Setting personal marks were Japheth Rutoh in the high jump and triple jump; Travis Wanker in the 1600, the Mustangs’ 4×100-meter relay team of Rutoh, Samuel Sturgeon, Damien Wacker and Drake Matthew; Brock Sander in the javelin; Sage Shaughnessy in both the discus and shot put; Wacker in the 100; Sturgeon in the 400 and Matthew in the 800.

For the Fillies, Ally Ellis set a personal mark in the javelin, the first Iola thrower to eclipse 90 feet this season. Iola’s 4×100 team of Abi Hirt, Ashtyn Aikins-Ansley, Elizabeth Baker and Abi Meiwes also ran their best time of the year, as did Hirt in the 100, and Meiwes and Baker in both the 100 and 200.
