Behind the scoring efforts of Derek Bycroft and Blake Ashmore, the Iola High freshman Mustangs jumped out to an early 5-0 advantage over the visiting Fort Scott Tigers on Monday.
But the Mustangs were unable to maintain their lead in their final game of Iola’s freshman tournament, and Fort Scott eventually won the contest, 44-21.
The Tigers answered the Mustangs’ 5-0 run with a 26-0 run of their own to take control of the game. Although Iola was shut out in the second quarter, it responded well after the half.
Kane Rogers and Cole Regehr helped the Mustangs outscore the Tigers 12-11 in the third quarter to climb back within 20.
And Iola kept up the fight in the fourth, scoring 4 more points to the Tigers’ 7.
By the end of the game, Rogers had totaled a team-high 9 points — all of which came in the second half. Bycroft, who began the contest with 3 quick points, finished with 5 points.
Regehr scored 3 points, and Ashmore and Brady Folk each scored 2 points.
In the tournament’s other boys game, Chanute defeated Prairie View, 61-22. Fort Scott finished first in the tournament and Chanute finished second.
