HUMBOLDT — Turnovers and cold shooting from point-blank range sealed the Humboldt High girls’ fate here Friday night, as they absorbed a 75-19 defeat to Caney.
“They’ve very good,” said Sherri Nelson, Humboldt coach, of the relentless Bullpup girls.
But, Nelson said, “I’m proud of our girls. They played hard until the end. They kept their heads together, and I think we’re making progress. Silly turnovers hurt us, and we missed an awful lot of shots in close.
“If some of those shots had gone, who knows,” she continued, particularly if the Lady Cubs could have avoided the rash of turnovers.
For the game Humboldt had 36 turnovers, with just nine in the second half; and improvements in the third and fourth periods didn’t occur because Caney let down. Coach Tom Nelson ordered his girls to keep the pressure on, even when Caney’s lead reached 50 points.
His high-octane approach to coaching, including frequent foray onto the court while the clock was running, earned him a technical foul in the second half. However, indicative of the way the game unfolded Humboldt was unable to cash in at the line or with possession from the technical.
Caney raced to a 19-0 lead in the first five minutes of the first period. With just under three minutes left in the period, Humboldt finally cracked the scoring column, with Makaylah McCall netting a goal.
Caney went to build a 49-13 lead by half-time, and then, if any doubt remained, put the game away with a 22-0 rampage in the third period.
Finally, midway through the fourth period Caney quit its press. By then the mercy rule had been invoked, with the clock running without pause. Humboldt’s girls got some satisfaction as the game wound down, “winning” the fourth period 6-4.
McCall had five points for the Lady Cubs, while Tylar Wells and Annalise Whitcomb each scored four. Madison Kellar, Lakota Wilson and Morgan Morris all chipped in two.
