The Allen Community College Red Devils were well aware that visiting Johnson County was one of the top volleyball teams in the nation. With their imposing front line, the Cavaliers entered the Allen gymnasium having won 17 of their last 18 matches.
Sure enough, Johnson County peppered the Red Devil defenders with an assortment powerful blasts, well-placed tips and solid defense.
“They stopped us from doing what we wanted to do,” Allen coach Jessica Peters said. “On the other side, we never could stop their runs.”
Johnson County broke to early leads in all three sets and never looked back in a 25-15, 25-11, 25-17 victory.
The loss is the second in a row for the Red Devils — 22-12 overall and 5-4 in Region VI standings.
“It’s disappointing,” Peters said. “We didn’t even make them work for it.”
The teams squared off in front of an enthusiastic crowd, many dressed in pink honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The Cavaliers raced to an 8-3 lead in the first set, 13-6 in the second and 13-5 in the third on the way to the sweep.
As evidence of Allen’s troubles, Peters noted the Red Devils had a combined 19 attack kills versus 17 attack errors.
“Nine of our 15 points in the first game came from their errors,” Peters said.
“We would like to thank the local and school support system that showed up,” she said.
Unfortunately, the fans saw “the most ugly performance from the 2013 Red Devil volleyball team,” Peters said. “Shades of pink was not all we saw. We saw a shade of Allen volleyball that had not existed all season.”
Sidney Keith led the Red Devils with seven kills, followed by Adriee Munoz with four kills and 11 set assists. Keith also had 11 digs.
The Red Devils head to Nevada, Mo., for a non-conference match Friday against Cottey.
