Iola High’s Fillies took their lumps on the basketball court early on Tuesday.
Visiting Chanute High’s pressure defense held Iola scoreless through the first quarter.
The Blue Comets were clicking on all cylinders, however, and led 21-0 by the midpoint of the second quarter.
But a funny thing happened as Chanute tried to put the game on cruise control.
While Iola was never able to get Chanute’s lead under 17 points, the Fillies created some defensive havoc of their own.
After allowing 18 first-quarter points, Iola limited Chanute to 13 points combined over the second and third periods.
The Blue Comets still won convincingly, 44-16, but the Fillies continued to show glimpses of spunk and improvement, leaving coach Becky Carlson convinced better things await the young Iola squad.
“I like this team’s fight,” Carlson said. “We were a little shell-shocked at the start. I think their speed surprised us, and they were hitting from outside. Once we got used to their speed, we did better.”
Chanute’s Brenna Olson keyed the Blue Comets’ torrid start, scoring eight points on her own. Iola, meanwhile, struggled with turnovers, committing 11 in the first quarter.
Chanute led 18-0 at the break and 21-0 before Iola’s Jo Lohman scored for Iola with about 3 1/2 minutes left in the half. Emma Sigg scored with 1:45 left, then Emma Piazza drained a shot at the buzzer for the Fillies.
Chanute’s 25-6 lead led to a near stalemate through the third quarter. Iola scored a single field goal, coming from Addie Haar about a minute into the second half. Chanute led 31-8 after three quarters.
Hannah Endicott scored to open the fourth period before Piazza and Moore hit 3-pointers for the Fillies down the stretch.
Piazza led Iola with five points. Emery Driskel hauled in six rebounds, while Endicott had two steals.
Olson’s 15 points paced the Blue Comets. She was the only player from either team to score in double figures.
“You can see our improvement,” Carlson said. “Once we came out with our 1-3-1 zone in the second half, our defense worked a lot better. We just need to keep working at it.”
Carlson also noted Iola (0-6) started the 2012-13 season with a brutal schedule, playing two ranked Class 4A teams in Burlington and Girard and a Chanute squad that qualified for the state tournament last year and returns a multitude of seniors.
“Our schedule has been tough, and we know what we need to work on,” she said.
Chanute also came out on top in the junior varsity and C team contest.
The Blue Comet JV won 36-19, outscoring Iola 13-0 over the fourth quarter.
Emery Driskel scored five points for the Fillies, followed by Mikaela Platt with four and Shelby Reno, Kyra Moore, Lohman, Ashlie Shields and Endicott with two points each.
In C team action, Chanute won 49-24. Scoring for Iola were Platt with 14 points, Hannah Ingle with four and Taelyn Sutterby and Ashlie Shields with two points apiece.
Iola resumes play Jan. 4 at home against Osawatomie.
