HUMBOLDT — Humboldt High head coach David Taylor found himself repeating an all-too-familiar refrain Friday.
“We just seem to have turnovers at inopportune times,” Taylor said. “I think I gave that quote last week.”
He did.
Humboldt’s turnovers prevented them from keeping up with visiting Cherryvale High in the second half of a 50-38 loss.
The game was tightly fought through most of the game. Cherryvale led by three after one quarter and Humboldt nursed a two-point cushion, 21-19, at the break.
Cherryvale outscored Humboldt 14-9 to lead 33-30 after three quarters.
“That’s still a three-point game, but turnovers killed us, and we missed some easy shots,” Taylor said. “We had to foul at the end, and they hit their free throws.”
Cherryvale drained 13 of 18 free throws in the contest. Humboldt, by comparison, went 6 of 11 from the line.
Tanner McNutt scored a team-high 17 points to pace the Cubs. Noah Thornbrugh added seven.
Trenton Loganbill’s 20 led the Chargers.
Humboldt falls to 1-7 overall and 1-4 in Tri-Valley League play with the loss. The Cubs play at the Blu-Jay Mid-Season Tournament in Pleasanton Tuesday. Humboldt plays Jayhawk-Linn at 5:30.
