YATES CENTER — In a back-and-forth contest, Cherryvale High found ways to score at the end, particularly from the free throw line, to defeat Yates Center High.
The Chargers drained 10 of 16 free throws in the fourth quarter, enough to hold off Yates Center 48-45.
The loss came in the championship of Yates Center’s preseason tournament. The Wildcats fell to 2-1.
“It just seemed like we couldn’t put things together enough to pull out the win,” Wildcat head coach Jason Weilert said.
Cherryvale opened an early seven-point lead, but that was the biggest lead either team would have from there.
Yates Center’s final possession, with the Wildcats trailing by three, went for naught when Cherryvale stole the ball with less than 10 seconds on the clock. Time expired before the Wildcats could get the ball back.
Paul Stockebrand scored 11 and Jake Morrison had 10 to lead Yates Center. Dalton Smith added eight points and five rebounds.
Trenton Loganbill scored 14, Micah Booe 13 and Jordan Lowden 12 to pace Cherryvale.
Yates Center resumes regular season action Tuesday at home against Neodesha.
