Chase is on the case: MV senior erupts in win

Chase Smith scored 23 points, including five second-half 3-pointers as Marmaton Valley came from behind to topple Northeast 62-54 Tuesday. MV travels to Altoona-Midway Friday.

MORAN — Torrid shooting from Marmaton Valley High’s Chase Smith led the way to a comeback victory Tuesday.

The Wildcat senior drained five 3-pointers across the third and fourth quarters as Marmaton Valley ended the game with a 19-8 run to defeat the Northeast Vikings, 62-54.

The win gives Marmaton Valley (6-10) three wins in its last five games.

Smith wound up with 23 points in the victory. Teammate Tyler Lord hit 6 of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter to wind up with 12.  The Wildcats shot 18 free throws in the fourth quarter, hitting 11,  as Marmaton Valley erased a 46-43 deficit entering the period.

Marmaton Valley had the early jump, racing to an 11-4 lead after one quarter. But Northeast responded with authority, tying the score at 21-21 at halftime. The Vikings erupted for 25 points in the third quarter to take a three-point lead.

Jaedon Granere added eight points and Todd Stevenson six for the Wildcats.

Dawson Troth scored 23 to lead the Vikings.

Northeast’s junior varsity edged Marmaton Valley, 17-15, in two quarters.

Brendon Newman scored six to pace the Wildcats’ JV. Garrett Morrison added three. Brevyn Campbell, Kyle Michael and Cooper Scharff added two apiece.

The Wildcats travel to Altoona-Midway Friday.
