HUMBOLDT — The Lady Cubs dug themselves a hole too deep in the first quarter against Cherryvale Tuesday evening.
Humboldt lost 63-32 to the Chargers, one of the top-ranked teams in the state. Head coach Sherri Nelson kept her head held high, however, relishing in the fact that her team never gave up their fighting spirit. They battled back on multiple occasions to keep Cherryvale’s lead never too comfortable.
“We had a fantastic effort tonight,” Nelson said. “We just couldn’t get those easy buckets.”
The Chargers helped dig that hole early for the Cubs, opening the game with a strong offensive showing. Lakota Wilson struck first for Humboldt, then Cherryvale went on a 13-2 run courtesy of Beth Hawkins, Josie Reilly and Jasi Adkison. The Cubs faced a 21-11 deficit after some key shots from Tilar Wells and Cheyenne English got them back in the action.
For the second quarter, it was a game of pure survival for the Cubs, and the Chargers weren’t making it easy. Hawkins and Adkison got hot from three-point range, contributing a pair of treys. They outscored the Cubs 20-10 in the quarter to go up 41-21 heading into the break.
“You could tell they had a lot of heart,” Nelson said.
The Cubs never ceased to battle back. They would never break below a dougle-digit deficit, but Wilson  and her fellow Cubs would never say die.
Despite any effort, however, the Cubs were down 55-28 going into the final quarter. A running clock made quick work of any notable change in the score.
Lakota Wilson led the Cubs with 11 points, followed by Hannah Hudlin and Makayla McCall with four apiece. The Chargers were led by Jasi Adkison with 21 points, Reilly had 14 points.
“Team chemistry is something we haven’t had in a while,” Nelson said, following the senior-night contest. “We’re definitely feeling more like a family.”
She noted that is due largely in part to her senior girls’ leadership throughout the season.
Tuesday’s game wraps up the regular season for the Lady Cubs at 5-15 overall.
