CHERRYVALE — A few too many miscues did in Yates Center High’s girls Tuesday.
“We had a few defensive breakdowns and we missed some shots,” Wildcat head coach Abbie Collins said. “That and we couldn’t make a free throw.”
Yates Center was an ice-cold 5 of 19 from the line, and despite closing within a single point down the stretch, could not come through at the end of a 47-44 loss to host Cherryvale High.
The defeat keeps the Wildcats winless in Tri-Valley League (0-4) and 1-5 overall.
Still, Collins found reason for optimism.
“The girls fought hard, and this was one of our better games overall.”
Cherryvale grabbed the early advantage, leading 12-9 after one period and 24-20 at halftime. They increased their lead to 39-30 after three quarters.
Yates Center closed the game with a 14-8 run but could never take the lead down the stretch.
Emily Baker drained three three-pointers en route to a game-high 13 points for Yates Center. Autumn Douglas followed with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Cherokee Shaffer added eight points, eight rebounds and four steals.
Mary Reilly scored 12 and Katelynn Main 11 to pace the Chargers.
Yates Center hosts TVL rival Humboldt on Friday.
