The Mustang bats did not show up the way coach Mark Percy had hoped they would in Iola High’s season-opening doubleheader against Chanute.

“I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect, but you got to hit the ball,” Percy said.

The Iola offense was shut out in both games as they fell by final scores of 6-0 and 10-0.

“Chanute has a pretty good baseball team,” Percy said. “We saw some pretty good pitching.

“There are some things we have to iron out, even though we have almost everyone back. We’ve got some young kids that aren’t too bad of players.”

Game one saw the Mustang offense just muster three hits in support of staff ace Ethan Scheibmeir, who limited the Chanute offense to a pair of runs through five innings.

“Scheibmeir pitched well,” Percy said.

A big sixth inning provided the final margin of victory for the Blue Comets as they posted four runs to take a 6-0 advantage.

The second game was no better for the Iola batters. Isaac Vink accounted for the only hit of the game for the Mustangs and Chanute’s Josh Miller confounded the Iola offense all game.

The game wound up being shortened to just five innings after Chanute jumped out to a 10-run advantage.

“We think we will have a pretty good baseball team but it didn’t really show today,” Percy said. “It is early and I think we will be OK.”

The Mustangs will try to right the ship when they host Central Heights for their home opener on Tuesday.

“We just got to get back to work,” Percy said.
