Crest knocks off Yates Center in season-opener

Crest erupted early, racing to a 26-0 lead in the second quarter of its opener against Yatest Center Friday. By the final gun, the Lancers had secured a 48-28 victory.

COLONY — Crest High’s Lancers scored three touchdowns in a 2-minute span midway through the first quarter Friday to set the tone for a 48-28 win over Yates Center in the season-opener for both teams.

Crest received several superlative performances, including four touchdowns from sophomore Kole Walter, including three for passes from junior quarterback Lane Yocham.

Unofficially, Walter hauled in six passes for 90 yards and three touchdowns, while rushing for 43 yards and a score.

Yocham hit 16 of 29 passes for 178 yards. 

Jensen Barker churned out 141 yards on 19 carries and two touchdowns.

Yates Center didn’t go down without a fight.

After falling behind 26-0 early in the second period, the Wildcats pulled to within 26-14 on back-to-back 28-yard touchdown runs from sophomores Marcus Cummings and Gavin Busteed.

Busteed’s 1-yard keeper midway through the third quarter pulled Yates Center to within 32-20, but Walter slammed the door with a 29-yard touchdown run late in the third to put Crest back in control.

Xander Fuller added 43 yards receiving for Crest. Barker also had 21 yards receiving on two catches, including a crucial third-down reception in the third quarter to help the Lancers regain momentum.

Cummings rushed for 141 yards and a touchdown for the Wildcats. Busteed had 61 yards on the ground and two touchdowns. He also threw for 21 yards.

The Lancers (1-0) host Northeast-Arma next Friday. Yates Center gets to play on its home turf as well, against Marmaton Valley.
