COLONY — The Crest Lancers started on a high note Thursday and ended on an even higher one.
Colony broke out of the gates to lead visiting Marmaton Valley 16-9 after one quarter.
The Wildcats whittled the lead down to 37-33 by the end of the third quarter before the Lancers ended the game with a 23-7 run to cruise to a 60-40 win over their Three Rivers League rivals.
The win improves Crest to 7-7 on the season. Marmaton Valley drops to 4-10.
Thursday’s game originally was scheduled for Jan. 9, but had been pushed back because of wintry weather.
Crest opened things with a balanced scoring attack. All five starters and reserve Gentry McGhee scored in the opening eight minutes as Crest took a seven-point lead.
The Wildcats stayed within shouting distance for the balance of the half before Chase Smith erupted for 11 of Marmaton Valley’s 16 third-quarter points.
But with Drake Weir’s seven points in the fourth quarter and Ryan Golden’s six, the Lancers slammed the door down the stretch.
Golden led the way with 20 points. Weir added nine and Jacob Zimmerman eight.
Smith paced Marmaton Valley with 15 points. Tyler Lord added 12.
Crest also won a hard-fought junior varsity contest, 32-28.
Drake Weir scored 12 for the Lancer JV, followed by Lane Yocham’s nine. Xander Fuller scored five, Henry White four and Tristan Boone, two.
Garrett Morrison led the Wildcat JV with 10. Cooper Scharff scored six, Todd Stevenson three, Brevyn Campbell and Dominic Smith two each and Kele Michael one.
Both Crest and Marmaton Valley celebrated their winter homecoming games Friday evening, but those games were not finished by press time.
Crest travels next to Burlingame Tuesday and St. Paul Friday. Marmaton Valley hosts Northeast-Arma Tuesday and visits Altoona-Midway Friday.
