COLONY — Crest High’s softball team opened the 2022 season with a bang Monday, steamrolling past visiting Chetopa, 17-2 and 20-10.
“In game one we had control the entire time,” head coach Casey Cook said. “In game two, we had some mistakes that allowed more runs to score, but I’m very proud of how the team battled back to come out on top. It was a great way to start off this season.”
The Lady Lancers wasted little time in the opener, erupting for 14 runs in the second inning to break open a 2-1 lead.
Meanwhile, Lindsey Godderz had things well in control on the mound, allowing two hits and striking out three over three innings. She also singled.
Other offensive contributors were Makayla Hammond and Sydney Stephens, each of whom singled twice. Kayla Hermreck and Allyssa Adams added one single each.
The onslaught continued in the second game. Crest scored six in both the first and third innings, three in the fourth and five in the fifth to end the game.
The Lady Lancers wobbled a bit in the fourth inning defensively, committing four errors, while Godderz hit a pair of Hornet batters as Chetopa scored seven in the frame.
But it was no match for Crest’s offensive potency, which was paced by Hammond, who singled twice, Kayla Hermreck, who whacked a pair of doubles and a single, and Anna Hermreck, who doubled. Stephens, Adams and Kaylee Allen all had singles as well.
Crest is at Marmaton Valley Thursday.
